Data story: How many people share each health facility, and how many more are needed by 2030?
One mapped health facility for every 6,897 people in Uganda
OpenStreetMap shows 6,656 hospitals and health centres III and IV in Uganda for 45.9 million people. 2 districts have none on the map. Only 1.05% of people have health insurance, and 34 of every 1,000 babies die before their first birthday.
- Mapped facilities: 6,656 (hospitals and HC III/IV)
- People per facility: 6,897 (lower means closer care)
- Health insurance: 1.05% (of household members)
- Infant mortality: 34 (per 1,000 live births (UBOS))
What comes next: Facilities needed just to stand still
To keep one facility for every 6,897 people, Uganda needs about 1,300 more by 2030 and 2,280 more by 2034 than are mapped today. On UBOS's official projection (55.3 million people in 2030) the figure is about 1,360.
| Year | If the trend holds | Range |
|---|---|---|
| 2030 | 54.9 million | 53.2 million to 56.6 million |
| 2034 | 61.6 million | 58.6 million to 64.8 million |
| 2040 | 73.4 million | 67.7 million to 79.5 million |
How this was worked out: Trend projection by Pearl Insights, not an official UBOS projection: the average annual growth rate between the August 2014 and May 2024 censuses is carried forward unchanged. The range shows the same rate 0.5 percentage points lower and higher. Real growth will differ as birth rates, migration and refugee arrivals change. Facility counts are OpenStreetMap features (hospitals and health centres III and IV); some facilities are missing from the map, so ratios overstate gaps where mapping is thin.
